FAQs
Wondering if our assistive technology can help you see differently?
We’ve answered some of the most common queries about our range of solutions.
What is assistive technology for low vision and how does it help?
For people with low vision, assistive “tools” include things like magnifiers, talking clocks, large‑print or high‑contrast items, smart speakers, wearable devices and screen readers that make text, screens and surroundings easier to access. These tools can support reading mail, managing money, cooking, navigating your home or community, and staying connected with family, friends, work or study, helping you maintain confidence and independence in daily life.
What types of assistive technology devices are available for people with vision loss?
Services usually start with a conversation to understand how your vision is affecting everyday tasks, followed by advice and training on specific tools or strategies. At See Differently, this can include low vision optometry, occupational therapy, orientation and mobility occupation therapy, technology advice, and access to a low vision shop and centres where you can try out equipment like magnifiers, smart devices, talking kitchen tools and wearable tech.
How do I know which assistive devices are right for my vision needs?
The right devices depend on your eye condition, your remaining vision, and what you want to be able to do day‑to‑day, such as reading, computer use, cooking or moving around safely. A low vision meeting with an optometrist, occupational therapist or orientation and mobility expert can test how you use your vision, then match you with specific tools (for example, a particular type of magnifier, task lighting, or a talking device) and show you how to use them comfortably and effectively.
Does See Differently provide consultations to help you find the right assistive technology?
Yes, See Differently provides low vision optometry and mobility and occupational therapy services that include assessing your functional vision, your home or work environment, and the tasks you want to manage more easily. These clinicians can recommend specific tools and strategies and arrange in‑home assessments if needed and connect you with See Differently’s technology specialists and shop so you can try equipment and decide what works best for you.
What funding options are available for assistive technology in Australia?
Depending on your age and circumstances, funding may be available through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), My Aged Care — Support at Home, or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA). If you’re not eligible for a funded program, products and services are also available on a fee-for-service basis. See Differently’s support coordination and funding advice team can help you work out which pathway suits your situation.
