Celebrating Literacy And Independence | 2026 Australian Regional Braille Challenge

Students, educators and tech experts came together in Adelaide to celebrate the power of literacy at the Australian Braille Challenge, hosted by See Differently with the Royal Society for the Blind in partnership with South Australian School and Services for Vision Impaired (SASSVI).

Now in its third year in Australia, the global Braille Institute initiative continues to highlight the important role Braille plays in education, independence and opportunity for young people who are blind or living with low vision.

The two-day event welcomed students aged 6 to 19 from across South Australia, including regional communities, who gathered to test their Braille skills through reading, comprehension and writing challenges in a fun, supportive and social environment.

Beyond the competition itself, the event fostered confidence, connection and a shared sense of achievement among participants.

“Braille is not outdated, it is the gateway to literacy,” said See Differently – Executive Director, Mr Papps.

The event also reflected the growing resurgence of Braille through research and innovation. See Differently’s Braille Trainer – Aasha Rose, was recently recognised for her research excellence, securing first place in the University of Southern Queensland’s 3 Minute Thesis competition for her presentation exploring Braille literacy.

Educators continue to emphasise that strong literacy foundations remain essential for success in both education and the workplace, with Braille playing a vital role for students who rely on tactile reading and writing.

Throughout the Challenge, students participated in a range of immersive experiences designed to support both learning and independence, including:

1. Braille reading and writing competitions
2. Interactive assistive technology workshops
3. Orientation and mobility activities
4. Café-style learning experiences
5. Cooking sessions promoting practical life skills
6. A Puppy Experience with See Differently’s Guide & Assistance Dog team
7. A formal Braille Challenge Dinner encouraging independence and social confidence

These experiences created opportunities for students to build friendships, develop new skills and celebrate their achievements in a supportive community setting.
