Adjusting to life with vision loss can feel overwhelming, yet no one has to navigate it alone. See Differently’s Peer Support Program in partnership with Beyond Blindness connects people with lived experience, offering guidance, reassurance and practical support at every stage of the journey.

Through shared understanding, our Peer Support Workers help participants build confidence, access services, and rediscover independence in ways that feel achievable and empowering.

“Losing my vision felt like everything was slipping away—but peer support showed me I wasn’t alone, and my life wasn’t over.” – Peer Support Client

For one participant, joining the Peer Support Program marked a turning point.

When he first connected with Peer Support Worker – Madelene, he had recently been diagnosed with a vision loss, and was struggling to come to terms with what it meant for his future. Losing his driver’s licence had left him feeling isolated, and he feared it would only be a matter of time before he lost his job. Through ongoing support, Madelene provided reassurance, answered questions, and most importantly, helped him see that he wasn’t alone.

Together, they explored practical pathways forward, connecting him with Job Access funding, which enabled access to assistive technology in the workplace. With the right support in place, he was not only able to remain in his role, yet he was also made permanent. And, the journey didn’t stop there.

With guidance from our Peer Support Program, he accessed See Differently’s optometry services and invested in Orientation & Mobility training. Learning to use a cane gave him greater confidence and safety when navigating the community, opening the door to independence he thought he had lost.

He also took part in the ‘Try Before You Fly’ program, delivered in partnership with Virgin Australia. Combined with his mobility training, this experience gave him the confidence to travel overseas with friends, something that once felt out of reach.

Today, his outlook is entirely different. What began as fear and uncertainty has shifted to confidence, connection and hope for the future.

“I’ve gone from feeling stuck at home and unsure about my future to getting back out into the world. I’m working, travelling, and doing things I never thought I’d be able to do again.” – Peer Support Client

For Madelene, there’s nothing more fulfilling than walking alongside someone as they rediscover their confidence—witnessing that shift from fear to independence is what makes every step of the journey worthwhile.
