Meet Cheryl and Sarah, two extraordinary South Australian women whose lives have been profoundly transformed by the support of their See Differently guide dogs.

Despite the different paths they’ve walked, both Cheryl and Sarah have found a shared sense of newfound independence and confidence through their remarkable companions.

On Friday, July 26th at the See Differently guide dog graduation, Cheryl graduated with her seventh dog, Willa, while Sarah will mark a significant milestone with her very first, Syd. They shared the stage with eight other handlers who have been paired with guide dogs over the past year. This graduation marked the beginning of a new and promising chapter in the lives of all ten handlers.

Cheryl’s journey with guide dogs began over five decades ago when her sight started deteriorating due to Retinitis Pigmentosa and glaucoma. Since then, these loyal and highly trained dogs have been her constant companions, providing her with independence, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose. Each guide dog has played a vital role in Cheryl’s life, enabling her to navigate the world with ease.

“Most of my guide dogs have been with me for 8 years. Those years have been invaluable. They have positively impacted my confidence, ability to work, and allowed me to contribute in a positive way to society. Every dog has made it possible for me to enjoy an active and fulfilled life,” said Cheryl.

Willa, Cheryl’s seventh guide dog, is a beautiful yellow labrador who has been specially trained to assist Cheryl in her daily activities. With her gentle demeanour and dedication, Willa has quickly become an integral part of Cheryl’s life. Together, they have formed an unbreakable bond built on trust and mutual understanding.

Alongside Cheryl on the special day was Sarah, who has been a client since childhood. She graduated with her very first guide dog, Syd. Living with congenital cataracts and a rare form of nystagmus, Sarah’s vision is severely limited, yet Syd’s arrival opens the door to new possibilities. Syd, a yellow labrador, has been meticulously trained to meet Sarah’s unique needs and provide her with the support she requires.

“I’m beyond excited to have freedom and companionship with Syd. They couldn’t have matched him and I more perfectly,” said Sarah.

Over recent months, Sarah has undertaken a placement with See Differently, working alongside Occupational Therapists and Support Coordinators, as well as finishing her last year of university. Syd has been instrumental in guiding her through this time, allowing Sarah to be more involved in her placement and university.

“I’m excited to start my career journey and embrace all that life has in store.”

“It’s important for people to realise that individuals with low vision are much more than their disability. It might take us a little bit longer to do something, but we are fully capable.”

Thanks to Cheryl’s seven guide dogs, she has been able to enjoy a lifetime of independence, while Sarah is just at the beginning of her own exciting journey toward the same goal. These guide dogs are more than just helpers—they are lifelines, providing Cheryl and Sarah with the freedom to live their lives fully.

The 2024 Guide Dog Graduation was a moving celebration of incredible partnerships. It brought together guide dog handlers, trainers, volunteers, and supporters who have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of these remarkable dogs.
