Our Legacy – History
From humble beginnings in 1884 to today’s innovative, state-wide network, See Differently has been a trusted guide for generations.
Yet, our eyes are firmly on the future as the world evolves, we are proud to be leading a transformational journey, embracing innovation and transformation to remain a leader in low vision support in South Australia.
Our founding story is one of fighting the status quo and of what can be achieved through partnership. 140 years ago, people who were blind or living with low vision had no prospects for education or work. A young man, Andrew Whyte Hendry, who had been blind from the age of six, wasn’t content with this bleak future and saw no reason why he couldn’t work and earn a living.
With assistance from Sir Charles Goode, a wealthy merchant and politician, a location in North Adelaide was found and then the Institution for the Blind was born, allowing people with low vision to contribute to society, making products andmaking their own way in life.
